Rodent Identification & Prevention

What are rodents?

Common home-invading rodents are mice and rats. There are many species of these rodents, but two of the most common are field mice and Norway rats.

Field mice have brown or grey fur and are small, about three to four inches long. Their fur-covered tail adds about two to four inches to their length.

Norway rats have long, heavy bodies that grow between seven to nine inches. Their tails are six to eight inches long and hairless. This species is brown, with black hairs scattered throughout.

One trait all rodents have is incisors that never stop growing, which causes them to have to chew constantly to keep their teeth from overgrowing.

Are rodents dangerous?

Although you might see people keep mice and rats as pests, wild rodents aren't as safe to be around because these animals can pick up diseases and bacteria before infesting, which they will then spread around the home.

Rodents can also spread fleas, ticks, and mites. Plus, they cause contamination with their droppings, urine, and saliva. So as you can see, they aren't pests you want anywhere near your home.

Why do I have a rodent problem?

Rodents are some of the most opportunistic pests. After centuries of living in close proximately to people, rodents have come to rely on people for access to food, water, shelter, and other resources. The availability of any of these resources in your home or around your property can attract them.

Where will I find rodents?

When rodents infest a residential home, they will make themselves known with signs such as chew marks, shredded fabrics and materials, droppings, odor, and grease marks. It's common to only see signs of rodents, not the pests themselves because they are primarily nocturnal and tend to avoid people.

If you see any of these signs, you should contact pest experts right away because of the dangers rodents pose.

How do I get rid of rodents?

Trying to eliminate a rodent problem alone can be ineffective and problematic. But the pest technicians at Caliber Pest Service are here to help you maintain a rodent-free home.

Our Bronx rodent control services start with an inspection to determine how severe the infestation is, where the pests are coming in from, and which areas need to be sealed.

We will then perform a treatment that will depend on your unique situation but can include exclusion, bait stations, and traps if needed.

How can I prevent rodents in the future?

While professional services and prevention methods are the best way to keep rodents out of your home, you must also address any factors that make your property more inviting to these pests. To do this, use these tips:

Keep your home free of food sources:

  • Clean up crumbs right away.
  • Use garbage cans with tight-fitting lids.
  • Keep food stored in airtight containers.
  • Remove bird feeders from your yard.

Protect your home by removing entry points:

  • Cut back any trees and foliage that touch the exterior of your house.
  • Inspect the foundation, exterior walls, and roof line for any holes that need repairing.
  • Replace any damaged screens and place covers on chimneys, drains, and vents.

Don't forget to call us at Caliber Pest Service for assistance with rodent prevention in the Bronx.
