Spider Identification & Prevention

What are spiders?

Spiders are arachnids. Like other arachnids, adult spiders have eight legs and two body segments and lack wings and antennae. Features that are unique to spiders are their ability to produce venom and silk. In addition, most spiders have many eyes.

One "spider" common in our area and regularly finds itself inside our Bronx homes is the daddy long legs. However, though they are predators like spiders, they are not true spiders because they only have one round body segment without a waist, and they do not produce silk and therefore cannot spin webs. Their eight extremely long thin legs help people to identify these common household pests easily.

Are spiders dangerous?

There are a couple of species of dangerous spiders in the United States. Lucky for us, most of the spiders living in our area are harmless. Dangerous spiders are those that have venom potent enough to harm a person. Nuisance spiders have venom, but it is only powerful enough to stun their insect prey.

Having spiders taking over our Bronx property is annoying and unnecessary but, in most cases, not dangerous.

Why do I have a spider problem?

Most spiders happily live outside, but they won't hesitate to follow their insect prey indoors when food sources become scarce. Most spider infestations begin inside our Bronx homes because of an underlying pest problem. Ants, cockroaches, flies, and other common household insects offer spiders reliable food sources.

Where will I find spiders?

When spiders enter our homes, they quickly move to areas that will allow them to hunt down their prey easily.

Some of their favorite hangouts are warm damp areas like kitchens, bathrooms, crawl spaces, basements, and utility rooms.

Spiders and their webs are usually discovered by homeowners in corners, around windows, vents, and light fixtures. Areas of clutter and spaces behind appliances and furniture and above cabinets are other spots you may discover spider activity.
